​HRR Rescue / Rehabilitation Horses

Jewell Horton, our founder has rehabilitated nearly 100 horses in her carrier from traumatic injuries, starvation and behavioral conditions.  Intakes are on a case by case basis which is mainly dictated by HRR finances, estimated cost of care, space and time.

HRR works with law enforcement and animal control agencies on stray-roaming, surrender and neglect cases.  IF you are with a law enforcement or animal control agency and need assistance, please email Jewell for assistance with these types of cases.  Cruelty case assistance is often at cost for investigating agencies! 2019 Equines

Mr Potatoes Mr P arrived from western NC with unmanaged lamanitis and cushings disease. He had also not had routine dental care in a while. He had a reaction to vaccines or medication during his rehab and required some special care from team HRR and our wonderful Veterinarians, Reagan Equine in Wilmington NC. Dandy - Miniature Appaloosa Dandy's teeth prior to care at HRR. He had not lost his foal teeth even though he was an adult and they were causing overcrowding, pain and if left untreated could have posed a major problem as he aged.

Diesel - Brunswick County Case Diesel is a senior gelding that was awarded to the custody of Brunswick County Animal Control after a neglect case. His initial rehabilitation started with another rescue in Brunswick County, and once the case ended he came to HRR. He will live out his days with his best friend Blaze on the grassy hillsides of VA at the Evelyn Alexander Home for Animals Sanctuary!

Blaze Blaze was an Appaloosa mix stallion that had been passed around for years with a nasty eye tumor that was left untreated. Brunswick County Animal Control became involved and Blaze came to HRR. He was a super sweet stud. There was something off about him though...

Noel Our rescue partners at Penderosa Rescue and Sanctuary, Kay & Michael Reece fell in love with her, especially Michael. So we surprise delivered her to PRS on Christmas Day with a Big Red Bow!

Champ Champ came with Mr Potatoes, he was a stunning QH, a former performance horse from the Dixie Stampede. He was almost completely blind and being given away over and over due to that! Being a very spirited horse he did NOT make safe choices and was a danger to himself, Mr P and people. He was by far one of the hardest euthanasia's we have ever performed but he was not living a good life... he screamed and would RUN full gallop into everything including MR P! it was incredibly sad... He is free

Blaze Sadly Blaze's tumor was cancerous and because it had been left untreated for so long it had spread deep into his skull and eye socket. It was causing him pain so Blaze was humanely euthanized.

Peoche Peoche is a senior Appaloosa mare in her very late 20's that has lived her entire life in the City of Wilmington. Her owner thought they were grandfathered in but zoning forced her out! We have kept Peoche for her while she frantically sold her home and move to a new place she can have her mare... Keeping them together is the goal! They are bonded and she puts all she has into this mare - who are we to take that away?

Noel Noel was basically abandoned in central NC and picked up by our friends at 4 Hooves Equine Services and transferred to HRR. She was malnourished, suffers from DSL and had pretty bad teeth...

Dandy - Miniature Appaloosa Dandy is a 2011 AMHA mini that was a breeding stallion. He was loved by his owners but they needed to downsize and we knew we could give Dandy some amazing opportunities. Living the life of a confined breeding stallion is lonely and stressful. Dandy was gelded, had some oral surgery due to overcrowded teeth, learned to have friends and was taught to drive. He was adopted summer 2019 by a veterinarian.

Mr Potatoes Mr P will live out his days on the grassy hillsides of VA at the Evelyn Alexander Home for Animals Sanctuary!

2020 Equines

Locke -2 year old Appaloosa Stallion (gelded 5/18/20) that came with Grace. Was turned out as a weanling and never touched until we took them to HRR in April 2020.

grace -2 year old Arabian mare that was surrendered from a farm in Columbus County where she was left as a 2 year old and not touched until we caught her and brought to HRR.

River Quarter Pony type mare on intake. Slightly underweight, FULL of sand, needed some oral care.

Sassy, RJ & Mia- Sassy (Mom), RJ (3 year old) and Mia (2 year old) - see the size difference due to lace of nutrition? The 3 year old stud is the same size as the nursing 2 year old filly... ALL HAVE BEEN ADOPTED

Sage -Senior Paint Mare that was brought to Pender County from Columbus on a trade. Upon delivery it was discovered she was lame, "buyer" declined, but mare wouldn't load, so seller left her! Buyer couldn't afford 2 horses or diagnostics, so mare was surrendered to HRR. She has an old tendon sheath injury that we have attempted to treat, but most likely she will just be a companion. She is at Penderosa Rescue and Sanctuary helping to recover Noel currently who needed a laid back companion!

Moonshine -An Appaloosa stallion that was found wandering the streets in SC that came to HRR. He was gelded and rehomed. He is now a driving horse.

Sage Sage had very bad teeth and a massively infected molar that had to be removed

Sassy QH Palomino Mare from Lenior County Neglect Case. She still had her 3 year old stud colt and 2 year old filly nursing her, and significant dental issues... She has been adopted.

RJ -3 Year old emaciated stud colt from Lenior County that was rehabbed and castrated. He was adopted.

Pixel -8 year old Mini Gelding (gelded on 5/18/20) he was taken in by a Pender Co family after being locked up in a stall for months because he was a stud... once he recovers from surgery he will be available for

Uno- Roan Paint/Appaloosa Stallion that was abandoned with Sparkles in Brunswick County. Came to HRR and was castrated and fully vetted then placed in a new home.

Lucky- Senior Paint Gelding that came with Patrick, he was also underweight under all that fur. He was adopted

Mia 2- 2 Year old palomino filly from Lenior County Neglect case - Adopted

2019 New Hanover County Woody Case

Brutus - 1997 ApHC Gelding Brutus was a champion Appaloosa show horse. He was emaciated on intake, severely foundered and unmanaged for many years - his weight and attitude improved dramatically over the short course of two months, but sadly his feet could not be repaired and his quality of life was diminishing. He was humanely euthanized in Sept. 2019 surrounded by people of loved him and made his last 60 days on earth the best he had endured in a long time...

Zippy - QH mare in late teens Zippy has made an excellent recovery and is headed to Virginia to live out her days with Pip at the Evelyn Alexandra Home for Animals Sanctuary.

Leroy - 22y Mule Gelding Leroy was in serious condition. On top of being emaciated, he had a intestinal parasite load that was so high, he required hospitalization and slow deworming over several days to prevent killing him from deworming! He was adopted!

Brutus 1997 ApHC Gelding Brutus the morning before we laid him to rest. He was spending much of his day lying down due to foot pain despite the maximum safe allowance of pain meds. On this morning, we gave him a very large amount of pain management to allow him to spend most of the day in the large grassy pastures of HRR before being laid to rest. He grazed, napped under the tree and had more cookies and peppermints than we could count.

Rita Rita was one of the worst survivors pulled from the farm. She was adopted by a local veterinary hospital equine assistant.
